MADISON, WIS. – John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Khongkha Khammanivong, 49, and Kongsaden Khammanivong, 43, Wausau, Wis., have been sentenced by U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson in federal court in Madison for charges relating to the distribution of marijuana and methamphetamine. The two men are brothers.
Khongkha Khammanivong was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in federal prison for distributing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and money laundering by using drug proceeds to purchase a 1979 Chevrolet Corvette. He pleaded guilty to these charges on July 22. The defendant admitted that in addition to distributing methamphetamine, he also had distributed over 300 pounds of marijuana in the Wausau area over a two-year period prior to his arrest in January 2016.
In rendering sentence, Judge Peterson stressed the harm that Khongkha Khammanivong’s methamphetamine sales caused the Wausau community.
Kongsaden Khammanivong was sentenced on September 20 to 11 days, time served, to be followed by two years of supervised release, for possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute. He pleaded guilty to this charge on July 11. At the time of his arrest in July 2015, he was in possession of 28 pounds of marijuana.
The charges against the two defendants were the result of an investigation by the Wausau Police Department; Marathon County Sheriff’s Office; Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Drug Enforcement Administration; and IRS Criminal Investigation. The prosecution of these defendants has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard.
